Side Effects

Constipation

Probable Cause

A common problem due to decreased intake of fiber until Phase 4 (Non-starchy Vegetables).

Recommended Solution(s)

  • Consume at least 8 glasses of water daily (e.g., unsweetened tea/soft drinks, water with shakes, etc).
  • Add fiber; best sources are Citrucil (tablets or powder), Metamucil, or other OTC fiber products.
  • Use a laxative, preferably a stool softener (e.g, Surfak OTC or Milk of Magnesia).
  • Take a fish oil supplement (up to 6 tablets/day).

Diarrhea

Probable Cause

Inadequate breakdown of complex carbohydrates in the intestine due to deficiency of enzymes. These undigested carbohydrates can:

  • Act just like a pile of sugar on the counter top and will “suck” up an adjacent puddle of water: the high concentration of carbohydrate “sugar” in the intestine “sucks” water into the intestine, causing diarrhea.
  • Be converted by intestinal bacteria to toxic products (propionic acid) that irritate the intestinal lining, causing water and fluid to “leak” into the intestine to be expressed as diarrhea.

Recommended Solution(s)

For 3 days, replace lactose containing PrescriptFit with seafood and poultry in Phases 2 & 3. Then start taking the lactose free PrescriptFit product. Diarrhea should not return.

Special Concerns

If diarrhea resolves after switching to lactose-free PrescriptFit, it is likely that milk, fruit (and fruit juices), beans (legumes), and wheat products will also contribute to gas and diarrhea.

Energy Loss and Tiredness

Probable Cause

Inadequate dosing of the PrescriptFit amino acid products to save money or calories.

Problems with sleep patterns, exercise extremes, and other medical causes, including side effects of medication.

Recommended Solution(s)

  • Consume more PrescriptFit doses daily by combining 2-4 doses in each serving.
  • Talk to your doctor about other possible causes for your loss of energy unrelated to your diet.

Special Concerns

If tiredness fails to resolve by adding more PrescriptFit doses per day, it is probably not from lack of food.

Hunger and Cravings

Probable Cause

Some confuse hunger with cravings. Cravings or “compulsion” is a feeling of “hunger” unrelated to the need for food. This form of food addiction or dependency occurs frequently during Phase 1 or 2 of the PrescriptFit MNT Plan.

Recommended Solution(s)

Quickly consume 2-4 doses of PresciptFit amino acids in a single or multiple shakes, puddings, or soups. If the “hunger” does not resolve, it is most likely a craving or food addiction issue.

“Re-train” your brain by feeding yourself more doses of PrescriptFit every time a craving or feeling of hunger occurs. Your brain will quickly learn that every “craving” feeling is followed by another shake, pudding, or soup rather than the usual chocolate, pastry, or pasta. Soon your “hungry” brain will learn adapt and stop harassing you with cravings.

Move immediately to the next Phase, which will “trick” your brain into accepting a “reward” that is less than expected. Keep advancing to other Phases until the cravings subside. Then go back to an earlier Phase associated with more rapid weight loss and disease control, advancing forward again to the next Phases on schedule. Ask you doctor about medications used to treat addictive behavior.

Special Concerns

Hunger – true hunger – is rarely experienced on the PrescriptFit MNT Plan. With proper doses, you get adequate protein and carbohydrate and additional branched chain amino acids to avoid behavior changes, including hunger. Those who first admit they have an addiction to food can begin to treat and overcome that addiction.

Hypoglycemia

Probable Cause

Taking medications that lower blood sugar (for type 2 diabetes).

Talk to your doctor BEFORE beginning the PrescriptFit MNT Plan if currently taking any medication to reduce blood sugar.

Recommended Solution(s)

  1. With physician supervision ONLY, reduce prescribed medications, such as insulin or glyburide.
  2. Quickly consume additional PrescriptFit supplements or snack bars to reduce symptoms within 5-15 minutes.
  3. Consume 8 or more doses of PrescriptFit products daily.

Special Concerns/Related Information

Those treated for diabetes must monitor their blood sugar at least once a day in Phases 1 and 2 of the Plan and keep in close contact with their doctor. Occasionally, weakness from low blood pressure (as described above) is mistaken for hypoglycemia. When in question, consume more PrescriptFit and more fluids.

Intestinal Gas

Probable Cause

Deficiency of enzymes in the intestinal wall that normally breaks down complex carbohydrates (e.g., lactose containing PrescriptFit products) into simple sugars for digestion, causing intestinal bacteria to produce methane, butane, and formate gases.

Recommended Solution(s)

For 3 days, replace lactose containing PrescriptFit with seafood and poultry in Phases 2 & 3. Then start taking the lactose-free PrescriptFit product. Gas should resolve within a day.

Special Concerns/Related Information

Those affected with Irritable Bowel Syndrome should only use lactose-free PrescriptFit products. If you suffer from gas, read the disease section on Irritable Bowel Syndrome in The Amino Solution.

Muscle Fatigue

Probable Cause

[MUSCLE FATIGUE] Low carbohydrate diets coupled with exhaustive exercise can cause sugar depletion in the muscles after 30-40 minutes of such exercise. Also known as “runner’s fatigue.”

[MUSCLE CRAMPS] Either depletion of muscle-storage sugar or potassium (typically from taking diuretics during initial phase of the Plan when fluid loss is most likely). Low potassium levels cause heart rhythm irritability and even heart muscle failure (a heart “cramp”).

Muscles contain only a limited amount of readily available stored sugar, known as glycogen. After depletion, a small time window of rapid repletion of muscle sugar from dietary consumption occurs, lasting 15-60 minutes after the exhaustive exercise. If sugar is not consumed and presented in the glycogen-depleted muscle during that window the muscle never quite recovers 100 percent. The next day the muscle doesn’t perform as well. If the sugar window is again missed, even more muscle depletion occurs which results in tiredness and fatigue, then requires rest and recovery. Muscle sugar-depletion is aggravated further if you begin to increase exercise during the low-carb phase of a diet. PrescriptFit MNT uses complex carbohydrates found in non-fat milk solids to prevent muscle cramps.

Recommended Solution(s)

  • Consume PrescriptFit supplements within 60 minutes of completing exhaustive exercise.
  • Increase dosage of PrescriptFit shakes, soup, or puddings.
  • See your doctor and monitor potassium level carefully if taking diuretic medication (even if recently discontinued).
  • Take a potassium supplement as prescribed by your doctor.

Nausea

Probable Cause

Nausea can occur either as:

  • A common symptom of gallstones or stomach ulcers.
  • An aversion response – something avoided because of an unpleasant experience.

In the latter case, nausea typically begins only with the start of the Plan, whereas symptoms will exist prior to the with the former scenario.

Recommended Solution(s)

Nausea should be addressed medically. Tests for gallstones or stomach ulcers should be considered. If negative, your physician can prescribe Reglan 10 mg prior to each amino acid shake for 1 – 2 weeks. Results will be immediate if Reglan works.

Another option is to discontinue PrescriptFit shakes for 2 weeks while continuing foods in Phases 2 or higher to see if symptoms continue.

Special Concerns/Related Information

Nausea is most common in carbohydrate-addicted individuals. Ask your doctor about taking Wellbutrin XL and then re-trying PrescriptFit. Wellbutrin is FDA approved for use as an antidepressant or anti-anxiety agent as well as for cigarette addiction. Food addiction has many of the same brain characteristics as cigarette addiction.

Weakness

Probable Cause

Fluid loss that causes a drop in blood pressure. Excess fluid weight loss of 8-10 pounds is very common after the first week of the PrescriptFit MNT Plan.

Talk to your doctor BEFORE beginning the PrescriptFit MNT Plan if currently taking medication to reduce fluid (diuretics) or lower blood pressure (antihypertensives).

Recommended Solution(s)

  • Consume all recommended PrescriptFit doses mixed as shakes with adequate volumes of water. Drink 4-8 additional glasses/servings of water or non-caloric soft drinks, tea, or flavored water daily.
  • With physician supervision ONLY, discontinue or reduce medication intake for fluid retention and high blood pressure.
  • Advance to Phase 2 or 3 (seafood or poultry), and season with salt to retain water and raise blood pressure.

Special Concerns/Related Information

Those taking diuretic, high blood pressure, or any other medication that lowers blood pressure need to contact their doctor immediately if weakness or lightheadedness occurs.
